Welcome to the LEBS Blog

We spend most of our day answering the same handful of questions in slightly different forms: when is this due, what happens if I miss it, and what should I actually be doing about it. This blog is where we start answering them in public.

Why We’re Doing This

Most of what UK business owners need to know about tax, payroll and compliance isn’t complicated — it’s just scattered across HMRC guidance, Companies House forms, and advice that assumes you already know the jargon. As an ACCA-regulated firm working with sole traders, limited companies and growing SMEs across the UK, we see the same questions come up again and again, from “do I actually need to register for VAT?” to “what even is a confirmation statement?”

Rather than keep the answers in client conversations and our FAQs page alone, we’re writing them up properly here — with enough detail that you can act on them, not just recognise the term.

What You Can Expect

  • Plain-English guides to the compliance deadlines that actually apply to UK businesses — statutory accounts, corporation tax, VAT, payroll
  • Timely coverage of changes as they happen, starting with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax as it rolls out from April 2026
  • Practical explainers for the decisions founders face early — sole trader vs limited company, when to move to cloud accounting, when a business has outgrown basic bookkeeping
  • No filler, no recycled press releases — if a topic doesn’t warrant a full article, we won’t stretch it into one

Where to Start

If you’re not sure where to begin, two posts are worth reading first: our guide to Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, since it affects a growing number of sole traders and landlords from April 2026, and sole trader vs limited company, which is the single most common question we get from people starting out. Beyond that, browse by whatever’s actually due next in your business — our services page lists everything we cover, and each post links through to the full service if you’d rather just have us handle it.
